O seu primitivo nome foi Vila da Praia, onde os primeiros povoadores se estabeleceram a partir de 1450 capitaneados por Jácome de Bruges, o primeiro capitão donatário da ilha Terceira, que ali estabeleceu a sede da capitania em 1456. A cidade sofreu bastante devido a catástrofes naturais (sismos) que destruíram a cidade.
