We can study language using a formalist approach, with an emphasis on form, internal structure, and the rules that organize the elements of language. Or we can study language using a functionalist approach, with an emphasis on its function. That is what we are going to do today. In this case, we use language not as an abstract structure of rules, but as an instrument of action that we use to act on others: to praise, encourage, congratulate. Or even to annoy, offend, humiliate. It is this emphasis on action, on function, that characterizes functionalism. As Austin said, “To say is to do”, remembering that the original title of the book is “How to Do Things with Words”. This is the basic idea of functionalism: language as action.
