Lupron Lowdown: Fertility Friend or Foe?

LUPRON! We talk about it all the time and use it many different ways. Lupron mimics the hormone GnRH which stimulates the pituitary gland to release FSH and LH which stimulate the ovaries. But if the pituitary is exposed to lupron long enough it switches from having a stimulating effect to a suppressing effect. This is why we can use lupron to both stimulate the pituitary to release more FSH and LH to grow and mature follicles - but we can also use it to prevent ovulation and suppress endometriosis. It is actually one of the most interesting drugs we use in fertility medicine.
