LNG-FPSO is divided into four parts: ship and ship natural gas liquefaction facilities, ship to sea facilities, and drilling facilities. Natural gas is drilled at sea, liquefied at -163 degrees Celsius, stored, and transferred to LNG carriers in a liquid state. Existing offshore natural gas drilling facilities have been transporting natural gas produced through pipelines and transporting it back to LNG carriers through liquefaction and storage stages, but LNG-FPSO can save time and cost as well as move to other gas fields after production in one region. LNG-FPSO의 정식 명칭은 액화천연가스-부유식 생산·저장설비(Liquefied Natural Gas-Floating Production Storage Offloading)로 영문 첫 글자를 딴 것이다. LNG-FPSO는 배와 배 위 천연가스 액화설비, 배에서 바다 밑까지 연결하는 설비, 시추 설비 등 4개 부분으로 나눠진다. 해상에서 천연가스를 시추해 영하 163도로 액화해서 저정한 후 LNG운반선에 액체 상태로 옮겨 싣는다. 기존 해상 천연가스 시추 시설은 액화 및 저장소가 없어 생산한 천연가스를 파이프라인을 통해 육상으로 보낸 뒤 액화·저장 단계를 거쳐 다시 LNG운반선에 옮겨 운송해왔으나, LNG-FPSO는 생산·액화·저장을 한꺼번에 처리해 시간과 비용 절감은 물론이고 한 지역에서 생산이 끝나면 다른 가스전으로 이동할 수 있어 ‘바다 위의 LNG 공장’이라 불리기도 한다.
