Hiking Indian Tomb Hollow, Bankhead National Forest, Moulton, Alabama
Indian Tomb Hollow is a rugged valley located on the very northern edge of the Bankhead National Forest along County Road 86 about 10 miles southeast of Moulton, Alabama. There is no marked trail, but there is an old forest road that is easy and mostly flat for the first couple of miles. My wife and I were looking for the Marker Tree. I should have researched that better ahead of time as we didn’t find it. We did find the Indian Tomb Hollow Cemetery but couldn’t find the Marker Tree. I now know that it was reported as dead in 2022 and has probably fallen down. We probably passed within 20 yards of it. The GPS coordinates for the Marker Tree (or whatever is left of it) are: Marker Tree GPS: 34.38243, -87.23978 After giving up on the Marker Tree, my wife returned to the car and I continued on into the hollow. This was mostly an off-trail hike up a rugged but beautiful valley along the Gillespy Creek that ends in a box canyon with a lovely little waterfall. After visiting that falls, I hiked around a corner and caught a glimpse of another one before heading back down the valley the way I came in. I’ve now also learned that there are probably 3 more waterfalls up another side canyon, so I’ll definitely need to return to check out the hollow more completely. Even without the Marker Tree, this is an interesting hike into a historic if rugged valley with tons of natural beauty on all sides. Link toTrail info: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/rec...
