Located in tropical rainforests, Xishuangbanna’s traditional Dai ethnic markets represent the most authentic food paradise in Yunnan. On market days, locals in traditional costumes gather here, with bamboo stalls filled with distinctive ethnic delicacies. Spicy pounded chicken feet, pineapple purple rice, lemongrass roasted chicken, Dai-style grilled food and mixed vegetable soup are the signature dishes. Relying on abundant tropical resources, sour bamboo shoots, green limes and chili peppers create the iconic sour and spicy flavor of Dai cuisine. A great variety of affordable tropical fruits such as durian, mangosteen and mini pineapples can be found everywhere. Different from commercial restaurants, street food here retains primitive cooking skills. Bamboo tube rice is freshly steamed on site with wild local vegetables. Market days are far more than shopping activities, but a miniature of Dai folk customs. Tasting authentic local food is the best way to experience the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in southern Yunnan.
