If you believe the atheist motorcyclists, manufacturers are deceiving us. They convince us to spend money on things we don't need. And if you believe in conspiracies, then spend it on something that actually kills chains. What heresy! What a reason to find out. Right after the intro. What is the purpose of chain lube? Well, to lubricate, to lubricate—most motorcyclists will say to lubricate. But most motorcycle chains will say "no." Instead of a preface to our tests, let's play a game of "guess what I'm drawing." Whenever the word "chain" comes to mind, fools like me often picture sealless links. And they, supposedly, need to be lubricated. Really, you idiot? But that picture of a chain is oversimplified. 95% of us don't ride like that anymore. For our sakes and our asses, chains with O- or X-rings, permanently lubricated from the inside, work. They consist of outer plates, like those that sit tight on the pins, and inner, loose plates. This is where they're riveted together, and this is where the lubricant forms an oil bath. And now here's a fact I can't wrap my head around. No matter what you lubricate the chain with, it won't get here. If it did, it would mean the chain seals are damaged. In that case, a chain like that is as useless as a vented condom. Of course, there's still movement here, where the seal meets the two independent plates. But no matter how powerful the lubrication they promise you, the friction between the seal and the metal won't get any easier. And your wallet will. If you're poor like me, you buy O-rings. When compressed, their contact surface area increases significantly. The friction force of nitrile and steel isn't very high, but multiply that by two seals per link, then by a hundred-odd links, and suddenly the chain becomes quite reluctant to bend. For the rich bitches, there are X-rings. They have a smaller contact surface area, a protective sealing layer, and additional lubrication in the resulting cavity, making the chain bend more easily. If a chain with O-rings robs the wheel of one horsepower, a clever X-ring chain will rob it of about half a horsepower. Wait a minute, smart guy. There's friction where the chain and sprocket meet, too. That's right, that's why rollers were invented: they fit between the teeth and rotate relative to the pinion. It all happens right here. And applying lubricant to the outer rollers doesn't change anything. The lubricant doesn't stick to them. And it doesn't matter how long the lubricant lasts. For a motorcycle with its monstrous power, it's just a one-night stand. As soon as the rollers touch the sprocket, all the lubricant is squeezed out. This isn't like an engine, where oil is constantly pumped under pressure. The lubricant between the rollers and the sprocket disappears after a couple of revolutions. And that's normal. And yet, why do you need chain lube? The first answer, which the manufacturer confidently agrees with, is corrosion protection. Which sounds strange, because WD-40 also protects against corrosion, or motor oil; in fact, refined oil will do just as well. There must be another reason why modern chains need lubrication. And the answer lies in renewing the lubricant in the narrow, unsealed gaps between the rollers and bushings. Perhaps some sophisticated lubricants hold up better there, perhaps liquids like WD-40 penetrate better, or perhaps some collect so much abrasive that they do more harm than good. It's all a closely guarded secret... We'll have to figure it out. Bel-Ray Super Clean is the most popular aerosol lubricant. Probably because of its white dye, which eliminates any guesswork about where you've sprayed. But everything has a price: $22 a can. Maxima Chain Wax is only $12 a can, making it a competitor to the famous Bel-Ray. It's a wax-based lubricant—paraffin, to be precise. This means it offers excellent protection against water and rust. Oxford's Dry Weather mint lubricant is the opposite: it doesn't protect against water at all, but it does contain PTFE, a substance similar to Teflon. It has one of the lowest coefficients of friction ever measured. Nothing sticks to it, it should win the sand-collecting test. Interesting note: Oxford is required by law to warn you that you'll die if you sniff their product. And yet, they've given the lubricant a delicious minty aroma. Hmm. Mac-off has a similarly useless property: it reflects ultraviolet light. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. I don't know about you, but I have a whole bunch of these flashlights in my toolbox. I just don't want anyone but Nancy Drew from "Crime Scene Investigation" to see where I squirt too much. Just kidding. This lubricant also lasts longer because it contains ceramic, which makes it more durable. The tiny particles in its composition roll back and forth like a million ba...
