Statecraft With Geeta Mohan: Can India Defeat OIC-Backed Tajikistan to Win UN Security Council Seat?

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to launch India's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–29 term during his visit to the UN Headquarters in New York. While India has served on the Security Council eight times before, this campaign comes at a far more challenging geopolitical moment. New Delhi is expected to face competition from Tajikistan, which reportedly enjoys backing from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), making the race for the Asia-Pacific seat more competitive. At the same time, global voting dynamics have become increasingly political. The wars in Gaza and Ukraine have reshaped diplomatic alignments, while Pakistan's improving ties with the United States under the Trump administration have added another layer of complexity to South Asian diplomacy. Although Washington continues to support India's aspiration for permanent UNSC membership, New Delhi will still need to secure a two-thirds majority in the UN General Assembly by winning support across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Arab world.
