Bregje Hofstede | THE VOICE OF A WOMAN | Ede NL | Generation Y

Talk of Bregje Hofstede, young writer and art historian, at Inspiration Event The Voice of a Woman, September 24 2016 in Ede, Netherlands, organized by Soroptimist Club Ede. Burn-out now threatens to afflict one in seven amongst the Dutch; and for the youngest generations, one in six. One factor in developing burn-out, which is often overlooked, is our relationship to our body: if we do not learn to read its warning signs, we are driving a car without a fuel gauge: the chances of breaking down are pretty high. Women, who are routinely objectified and a majority of whom are insecure and very critical about their bodies, are worse at reading the body's interior signals, because they adopt an outsider's perspective. Burn-out is not a 'first world problem' for spoilt kids, since it severely affects your ability to function (and deal with other pressing problems). Nor is it a personal problem: it is structural, and therefore political. The debut novel pf Bregje Hofstede The sky over Paris was long listed for the Libris Literatuurprijs and the Gouden Boekenuil, among others. Her essays and short stories have appeared in De Gids, De Morgen, Hollands Maandblad, Tirade, DW/B and Das Magazin. Bregje has written a series of articles about burn-out for De Correspondent and her related collection of essays, : De herontdekking van het lichaam. Over de burn-out", has appeared in October 2016. ' Prior to and after her talk, Bregje Hofstede was interviewed by Hannie Hoekstra.
