The Race of the Century: The '58 Mile
In 1958, a field of the greatest mile runners from around the world was assembled in Santry Stadium, Dublin. Among those in the race were 1956 Olympic champion Ronnie Delany and 1960 Olympic champion Herb Elliott. Elliott won the race that night, smashing the world record at the time. And it was also the first time in history that the first five athletes finished under the four-minute mark. Also competing in the race was 19-year-old Carlow man, Dan Carbery who spoke to us about the legacy of the race that is still being talked about 60 years later.
