Sore feet and stolen land - the 1975 Land March I The Hui 2025

Julian Wilcox talks to Rose Rahahui Spicer, and Deirdre Nehua who walked in the 1975 Land March, about marching to protest the loss of millions of acres of Māori land. Rose was 19 years old at the time and remembers sore feet and being told to piss on their blisters to fix them, as well as taking kūmarahou to keep them going. Deirdre talks about her love of whenua and the risk of the whole Whangaruru coastline being stolen by the Government with nothing left for future generations. Deirdre says Dame Whina Cooper was the right person to be leader as she had charisma and knew how to talk to both Government and Māori. Many others such as Carmen Kirkwood, Witi McMath organised from behind. In 1975 they were kids who went out with a hope that everything was going to be ok and never imagined that 50 years later mokopuna would be having to hikoi for the same thing they were - the privilege and right just to be Māori. Deirdre states that the sad thing is all the Māori in Parliament are "selling us out, and your people will curse you through the ages".
