Jewish Budapest: Exploring the Heritage of the Dohány Synagogue | SLICE TRAVEL | FULL DOC
Budapest was the unification of three cities and became a proudly Jewish city where technology and innovation led to the construction of its most famous synagogue, the Dohány. The synagogue, the second largest in the world, contains preserved sacred Torah scrolls, from which all Jewish liturgies originate. Zsuzsanna Toronyi, chief curator of Dohány Museum, demonstrates how a Torah scroll is sacralised. She reminds us that Judaism is a ‘nomadic’ religion and that a synagogue can exist anywhere, at any time, as long as 10 Jewish men are present. She also shows us the incredible collection of sacred artefacts, stored in the Museum’s extensive archives. We then meet Ivan Fischer during a rehearsal for his next concert. Ivan is a conductor, a pianist and one of the distinguished representatives of Hungarian Jewish culture.
