D18E – “Belgian locomotive” – is not only an 81-ton block of steel, but also a part of the memory of Vietnam’s railways. From the Vietnam-Belgium economic cooperation agreement in 1977, to 1983, 16 D18E locomotives numbered 601–616 were officially handed over to Vietnam Railways. For more than four decades, D18E has been crossing mountain passes and streams every day, pulling hundreds of trains on the North-South route and the North Central region, so durable that it has become the “steel veteran” of the industry.
