From the western suburb of Katy to downtown Houston, Interstate 10 is known as the Katy Freeway, a highway engineering marvel widened in 2008 to as many as 26 total lanes. This includes the six lanes of the frontage roads, also known as feeder roads or access roads, which feature traffic lights, driveway access, and direct connections to businesses and neighborhoods along the freeway corridor. Between the West Beltway and the West Loop, the Katy Freeway features a basic configuration of 14 main lanes with seven lanes in each direction. When auxiliary lanes, entrance ramps, exit ramps, managed lanes, frontage roads, and feeder roads are included, the total width expands to an incredible 22 to 26 lanes at multiple locations. East of Gessner Road, the freeway reaches its maximum width with 12 main lanes, eight frontage road lanes, and six Katy Managed Lanes dedicated to HOT/HOV traffic. Near Bunker Hill, the Katy Freeway reaches one of the widest freeway right-of-ways in the world at 556 feet wide, with up to 29 striped lanes including toll lane connectors and turn lanes.
