“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and to realize that that prisoner was you.” (Lewis Smedes) Holding onto hurt only leads to bitterness. Forgiveness is powerful and can liberate. But it isn't easy, especially when it involves serious things like abuse or murder. William Paul Young grew up as a boy in a tribe in Papua New Guinea. He was the son of missionaries and experienced a strict upbringing from his father. As a young boy, he also experienced sexual abuse within the tribe and later at a boarding school. These experiences shaped him; he became a self-promoter who liked to define himself by his achievements and had an extramarital affair. Young went through several processes of forgiveness. At 50, he considers himself reconciled—with himself, with his wife, his father, and even with one of his former tormentors. He wrote the book "The Shack," which incorporated biographical elements and inadvertently became a bestseller. On the night of January 11, 2010, Samuel Flemming (20) was brutally murdered by a "friend." Shortly afterward, the police arrested the perpetrator: Mike (name changed), young, slight, confessed—but remained silent about his motive. In the summer of 2010, Lisa and Michael Flemming stood trial as co-plaintiffs—facing their son's murderer. A moment almost beyond words. And yet, something unexpected happened during the trial: The parents declared their intention to forgive—even before the perpetrator apologized. "Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness," said Michael Flemming, "but an act of strength." As Christians, they drew strength from their faith—not from a desire for revenge. Lisa Flemming recalled how, while reading the autopsy report, she consciously forgave every gruesome detail. "Afterward, I felt a supernatural peace." For her, forgiveness did not mean forgetting—but rather freeing oneself from hatred. Even though they still don't have an answer to the "why," they sense that forgiveness brings healing.
