MÉTODOS ANTICONCEPTIVOS NATURALES: LACTANCIA, MOCO CERVICAL, SINTOTÉRMICO -Ginecología y Obstetricia
There is a clear lack of awareness among healthcare professionals about natural methods, however, more and more women are asking us about them and their effectiveness. Ana (@ciclika.es) explains the differences between each of these methods. More information, other videos, podcasts, PDFs, and more... NATURAL METHODS Natural contraceptive methods have been systematically disparaged by many gynecologists, largely due to lack of awareness. However, not all natural methods are the same, and their Pearl Indices vary widely. Furthermore, since these methods do not involve the pharmaceutical industry, they are often under-researched, and we have few quality studies available. LAM (lactational amenorrhea method): This method is based on the assumption that breastfeeding decreases the likelihood of pregnancy. It is a very effective method provided all three requirements are met: EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding, less than 6 months postpartum, and amenorrhea (if the period is between day 56 and 6 months postpartum). If any of the prerequisites are not met, the effectiveness of the method decreases. The Pearl Index, provided all three criteria are met, is less than 2, making it a highly effective method. CALENDAR METHODS (OGINO-KNAUS) The calendar method (OGINO and Knaus) is based on identifying fertile days based solely on the day of ovulation. This method is not very effective and should not be recommended. CERVICAL MUCUS OBSERVATION METHODS (BILLINGS and CREIGHTON MODEL). These methods are based on observing the characteristics of cervical mucus to determine the fertile window in each cycle. This method is considered highly effective with a very low Pearl Index. In addition to preventing pregnancy, they have other uses, such as understanding a woman's cycle or increasing the chances of pregnancy if that's what she's seeking. SYMPTOTHERMAL METHOD. The symptothermal method is also considered a highly effective method, with a Pearl Index of 2 (compared to the Pearl Index of 9 for birth control pills). It is based on combining cervical mucus observation with basal body temperature and cervical palpation.
