Former Danish Foreign Minister Mogens Lykketoft asserted that relations between European NATO members and the United States deteriorated during Trump's second term. He pointed to the absence of any clear indication from the US president regarding his commitment to supporting Europe and the North Atlantic Alliance, or to helping them secure a fair agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Lykketoft criticized the lack of European consultation regarding the war with Iran, emphasizing that no European country wanted to participate. He argued that Trump, in a sense, lost this war after being convinced by illusions presented to him by Netanyahu. Regarding the Iranian nuclear issue, Lykketoft predicted that the Memorandum of Understanding would undergo several extensions, as resolving the problems that have persisted since 2015 cannot be achieved in weeks or months. He stressed the need for patience and European support to reach a sustainable agreement. Concerning military aid, he explained that Europe is more capable of standing on its own militarily, but still requires the American security umbrella.
