Stagnant, foul smelling water pools for months at Jefferson House Apartments in Beaumont

Residents at the Jefferson House Apartments in Beaumont say they have been dealing for months with foul-smelling, dirty stagnant water that has pooled in the complex’s parking lot, creating what they describe as an ongoing public health concern. Derrian Jones, a resident at the complex, said the odor is immediate when arriving at the property. “As soon as you pull in here you smell it it hits your nose it smell like ass. Im not gonna lie. It really do,” Jones said. Jones said the standing sewage water makes it difficult for residents to avoid walking through it. “Like this nasty. It is really, honestly disgusting to have to come outside every day, every night and smell this and walk through this and see this like no,” he said. Jones said he believes the apartment complex has not taken steps to address the problem. “It’s like they ignore and you know, but they want money every month. You feel me but, they not helping us and the living situation. So I feel like we should pay no (blip) rent for three months. And you feel me like we’re not getting that? The resolve. Nothing in the house resolve nothing outside, the house. So what we staying for? What we spending our hard working money for,” Jones said. He said he wants to be able to get from his car to his home without dealing with the smell and the water. “I would like to get on my car and be able to just walk to my house without tiptoeing and smelling shit. On, bro. It really stank,” Jones said. Jones also said residents have not been told where the water is coming from or why the odor is so strong. He said the standing water is attracting mosquitoes. “For a nighttime when you put your headlights on, it’s just a whole damn generation of mosquitoes for real,” Jones said. Jones said he hopes the city’s involvement will lead to action, but he plans to leave. “Hopefully the city can help or get something done, but I’m moving,” he said. Beaumont City Council is now addressing concerns about public health nuisances and violations found on the property. The property owner has 10 days to fix the issue.
