First Reading The rain makes the earth sprout. From the book of the prophet Isaiah Isaiah 55:10-11 Thus says the Lord: "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there without watering the earth, without making it bring forth and sprout, so that it gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so will my word be that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without achieving the thing for which I sent it." Second Reading From the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans Rom 8:18-23 My brothers, I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God. For creation was subjected to futility—not of its own will, but by the will of the one who subjected it—in hope that creation itself will be freed from the bondage of corruption and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now. And not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. The Word of God. From the Gospel according to Matthew Mt 13:1-23 That day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. He spoke to them many things in parables. He said, "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up immediately, because it had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. Other seed fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear." Then the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" He answered them, "Because to you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to him who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables: because looking they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says: 'You will indeed hear, but never understand; you will indeed see, but never perceive. For this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes, lest they should see with their eyes, lest they should hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart, lest they should turn, and I should heal them.' But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. Truly I say to you, many prophets and righteous people desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not listen. Hear, then, the parable of the sower. Whenever anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. What was sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself and endures for a while, so that when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, he immediately falls away. What was sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but the cares of this world and the lure of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. What was sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it; he bears fruit and produces a hundredfold, sixty, or thirtyfold. The word of the Lord.
