It Cost $13 Million to Make This Ship Clean Enough to Sink

The fastest ocean liner ever built is being deliberately sunk, because the materials that made her indestructible also made her poisonous. The SS United States hit 38.32 knots on trials in 1952 — a Cold War weapon system disguised as a passenger ship, built under a Pentagon mandate to carry 14,000 troops 10,000 nautical miles without refueling. William Francis Gibbs banned wood from her almost entirely after the Morro Castle fire. What replaced it was asbestos, PCBs in the wiring and ventilation gaskets, and over a million square feet of zinc chromate primer. Sinking her is the easy part. Before she can touch the seafloor, 99% of her PCBs, every mile of wire, both 65-foot funnels, and the residue in all 120 fuel tanks had to be hunted down and removed. This is the forensic engineering of unbuilding — reverse-engineering a ship's construction to find every gram of material the EPA won't allow in the Gulf of Mexico. ON THE HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM DISPUTE This project is contested. Okaloosa County and the EPA argue that in low-oxygen, high-organic seafloor sediment, hexavalent chromium reduces to the far less toxic trivalent form. Erin Brockovich and other critics argue that this reduction is a modeled prediction rather than a demonstrated outcome at the scale of a million square feet of primer, and that leaching could bioaccumulate for decades. The EPA currently permits zinc chromate to remain on reefing vessels provided the paint is not actively exfoliating, so the project is legally compliant — but compliance and safety are not the same claim, and the video says so.
