I made a Little Wormaid (She is Horrifying)
My son came up with the ultimate creature design: an earthworm mermaid. So naturally, I had to bring "Wormaid" to life in my workshop—and the final sculpt is beautifully horrifying. Welcome back to the workshop! After bringing my son's last math homework doodle to life, he hit me with his next creative masterpiece: a "Wormaid". This video details the step-by-step process of turning his quirky childhood "dad joke" into a fully realized, three-dimensional mixed-media character sculpture. To capture her hilariously unamused expression and slimy, deep-earth aesthetic, I ended up throwing a bit of everything at this build. We are combining traditional wood carving with polymer clay sculpting, custom yarn hair, and a dynamic moss-wave diorama base to make her look like she's splashing out of the ground. 🛠️ MATERIALS & TOOLS USED While there is still some carving in this project, this build is a true mixed-media entertainment craft project: The Tail: Hand-carved from a block of wood to give her lower body a solid, organic structure. The Sculpt: Polymer and air-dry clays for her highly expressive, grumpy face and custom leaf-bra detailing. The Hair: Combed-out yarn styled and secured to look like wet, flowing mermaid locks. The Base: A custom diorama featuring a foam hill, fake dirt, and preserved moss arranged to look like a splashing "crashing wave". The Details: Clear epoxy resin drips to simulate fresh, glistening slime. 👋 JOIN THE COMMUNITY What do you think of my son's creation? Is she charmingly grumpy, or is she pure nightmare fuel?
