The head of state made the technical opening of the Murovdag tunnel, which was built at the 13.5th kilometer of this highway and is 11.7 kilometers long. Saleh Mammadov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Azerbaijan State Highways Agency, informed the head of state and the first lady about the work carried out and currently being carried out. In August 2021, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the groundbreaking ceremony of this highway. According to the instructions of the head of state, one of the most important infrastructure projects implemented in the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions is the 82-kilometer Toganali-Kalbajar-Istisu highway. The Toganali-Kelbajar section of this road is 56 kilometers long, and the Kalbajar-Istisu section is 26 kilometers long. The Murovdag range begins at the 13.5th kilometer of the highway. Thus, the most important part of the road passes through the Murovdag range. Here, the altitude increases from 1,700 meters to 3,250 meters. For the safe operation of the highway in the winter, it was considered advisable to construct a tunnel under the Murovdag range. The Murovdag tunnel is one of the longest automobile tunnels in the world. Thus, in terms of length, this tunnel is the 18th in the world, the 5th in Europe, and the first among the CIS countries. The tunnel will have 4 traffic lanes, two outgoing and two incoming. The excavation in the tunnel, as well as work on 38 crossings connecting the right and left sections, has already been completed. In addition to the Murovdag tunnel, four more tunnels with a total length of 2,636 meters are being built within the framework of the project. The main construction works in these tunnels, including drilling, concrete lining and most of the other technical works, have already been completed.
