Alhama de Granada is a Spanish town and municipality located in the central-western part of the Alhameña region, in the province of Granada, community of Andalusia. It borders the Granada municipalities of Zafarraya, Loja, El Salar, Moraleda de Zafayona, Cacín, Chimeneas -through an exclave of its municipal term-, Arenas del Rey, Játar, Fornes, Jayena, Otívar and Santa Cruz del Comercio -enclave in its term-; and with the Malaga municipalities of Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida, Salares, Sedella, Canillas de Aceituno and Alcaucín. The Alhama (or Merchán), Cacín, Cebollón and de la Madre rivers flow through the municipality, where a large part of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park is located. The municipality of Alhama includes the population centers of Alhama de Granada -municipal and regional capital-, Buenavista, Pilas de Algaida and Ventas de Zafarraya. The last two form a Local Autonomous Entity. Alhama de Granada is known for its Arab thermal baths, built on the remains of the Roman baths, from which comes its name, al-Hama, (meaning the bath) and which would give rise to the current spa,1 and for its imposing cliffs and ravines located within the natural park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, spectacular landscape formed on the Alhama River, confined in the upper part of the town.
