The Forgotten Irishman Who Set Ghana Ablaze | True Story of Faith (James McKeown)
In June 1937, in a mud hut in Asamankese, Gold Coast, an Irish missionary lay dying of malaria. The African believers who had invited him knelt around his bed and prayed all night. Their doctrine was absolute: Christ was the only physician. Medicine was a denial of faith. But the fever did not break. And the man on the mat was slipping away. So a Ghanaian named Mr. Turkson slipped out of the village, walked to Kibi, and told the British District Commissioner there was a dying white man in a village 80 kilometers away. The Commissioner drove out, lifted McKeown into his own vehicle, and carried him to the European Hospital in Accra. Ten days of quinine and intravenous care. And he lived. But when he returned to Asamankese, the leaders who had prayed for him could not accept what he had done. At the Christmas Convention, they questioned his faith. In 1938, he was formally expelled — not for sin, not for betrayal, but for accepting the medicine that saved his life. A few loyal believers from Akroso came for him. Too weak to walk, McKeown was carried on their backs for 16 kilometers — across rivers, through dense forest — to a new beginning with nothing. From that expulsion, that fever, that humiliation, came the Church of Pentecost — today the largest Christian denomination in Ghana, with millions of members, over 20,000 congregations, and a presence in 190 nations. His name was James McKeown. An uneducated Irishman from Ballymena. And the church born from his rejection — still burns with the fire he never lived to see fully ablaze. ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 The Fever That Would Not Break 02:10 The Hesitant Call from Ballymena 09:39 The Hospital and the Expulsion 17:31 Carried on Their Backs — The New Beginning 24:57 The Divine Irony and the Harvest 🔥 IF THIS STORY STIRRED SOMETHING INSIDE YOU 👉 SUBSCRIBE for more stories of heroes of faith 👉 Consider becoming a channel MEMBER to support this work 👉 Or send a SUPER THANKS to help us research more forgotten testimonies 💬 TELL US IN THE COMMENTS: Where are you watching from?
