This engine belongs to the EA153 family, known as the R5-TDI engine with Bosch Pumpe-Duse fuel system unit injectors. The main problem with this powertrain is the cylinders, which have plasma-sprayed surfaces, which often develop scuffs due to the coating shedding. Other problem areas include the unit injectors and injector bores in the cylinder head, tandem pump seals, the hard-to-reach location of the coolant pump, fuel contamination in the oil, and engine oil entering the power steering system. This video discusses how to fix an oil leak near the rear of the cylinder head. We'll replace the tandem pump gasket and the power harness for the unit injectors. We'll also install a new oil filler neck seal.
