Abbado promptly shushed the audience into silence, and his shushing is audible. I recall a similar occasion, with Abbado conducting the Mahler 9th, in which, at the very end of the final movement, he turned to face the first few rows in the hall, orchestra level, and gave those seated the look of death so they would stop talking and rustling in their seats and learn to appreciate and respect those important final dying notes; to learn to observe silence.
