During the Korean War in April 1951, Miyamura’s position was targeted by a massive Chinese assault, prompting him to order his squad to withdraw while he stayed behind to cover them. He single-handedly held off the enemy for hours, killing more than 50 soldiers using machine guns, his rifle, and even a bayonet in desperate hand-to-hand combat before being wounded and captured. Because the U.S. government feared his captors would execute him for such a devastating blow to their forces if they learned of his heroism, his award was kept strictly confidential for the 28 months he spent as a prisoner of war. Miyamura only learned he had received the nation's highest military honor upon his release in 1953, when a general finally revealed the "Top Secret" decoration that had been waiting for him.
