Interestingly, construction of the building began back in 1931 as a massive "House of Science and Culture" complex, but during construction, as often happened, the concept changed and the project was significantly altered. The theater's opening was scheduled for August 1, 1941, but the war interrupted it. During the Great Patriotic War, the completed opera house housed exhibits from evacuated museums, including paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery and a violin collection from the Bolshoi Theater.
