The philosopher Plato, the great disciple of Socrates and the great teacher of Aristotle, legitimately divides the history of philosophy in two: after him, nothing will be the same. Perhaps the most famous part of his philosophical system is the Theory of Ideas: the thesis that, in addition to the sensible world, there exists an ideal world or intelligible world where the eternal and incorruptible Ideas or Forms of things exist. In parallel to this ontological dualism of Plato, we also have the epistemological dualism between the senses and reason. If the senses know the sensible world of the mutable, reason or intellect knows the intelligible world of the immutable. And the best thing about all this is that Plato, in his book "The Republic" (VI, 509d-511e), outlines his ontology and epistemology in a line divided into four fragments. This is the famous simile of Plato's line, sometimes also known as the analogy of Plato's line, or simply as Plato's divided line. In this line, Plato represents, on the ontological side, the sensible world and the world of Ideas, and on the epistemological side, opinion or dóxa and knowledge or epistéme. In turn, dóxa is subdivided into imagination or eikasía and belief or pistis, each corresponding to its own ontological object. At the highest level, episteme, which knows the Ideas, is subdivided into discursive thought or dianoia and noesis or intellection. This is the abstract skeleton upon which Plato's famous myth of the cave is built immediately afterward (Republic, VII, 514a-517c), on which films like The Matrix and The Truman Show are based.
