Do XLR cables really affect the sound? In this video, I personally crafted and compared Belden 8412 and Canare L-2T2S cables. I also tested the differences between Neutrik and Switchcraft connectors using the same cables. After comparing recordings of the same performance under identical conditions, I found it difficult to perceive a significant difference in my environment. Typical Examples • Passive Electric Guitar → First Input on Pedalboard (TS Cable) • Passive Guitar → Audio Interface Hi-Z (Inst) Input • Turntable → Phono Preamp 💡 If you are expecting the specific characteristics of each cable, using them in this high impedance range may be the most effective. 🛡️ Low Impedance (Low-Z) In the low impedance range, the signal is relatively less affected by the cable, so tonal changes due to the cable material are often not significant. Typical Examples • Microphone → Audio Interface (XLR) • Kemper / Fractal / Quad Cortex → Audio Interface • Pedalboard passing through the buffer → Amp • Audio Interface → Monitor Speakers • Active Pickup (EMG, etc.) Guitar Output 💡 In these sections, considering noise shielding performance, durability, and flexibility rather than differences in cable tone can be a more practical choice.
