“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7 (NIV). Without the law, people cannot form a right concept of God’s purity and holiness or of their own guilt and impurity. They have no true conviction of sin, and they feel no need to repent. Because they do not see their lost condition as violators of God’s law, they also do not realize their need for the atoning blood of Christ. They accept the hope of salvation without any radical change in their hearts or reformation in their lives. Thus, superficial conversions abound, and multitudes join the church without ever having been united with Christ (The Great Controversy, pp. 461, 462). Many who claim to believe and teach the gospel fall into a similar error. They set aside the Old Testament scriptures, of which Christ declared, “They are the ones that testify about me.” John 5:39. By rejecting the Old Testament, they practically reject the New. For both are parts of an inseparable whole. No man can correctly present the law of God without the gospel, nor the gospel without the law. The law is the gospel synthesized, and the gospel is the law developed. The law is the root, the gospel its fragrant flower and fruit (Words of Life from the Great Teacher, p. 99).
