But after spending 2 decades working in it, I'm not so sure. Even though our tools are ever better, we keep doing the same things. Best case, that means we're not fully taking advantage of recent possibilities, worst case we're looking at higher operating costs and increased manpower spend. With access to public clouds for over a decade, our performance hasn't depended on a single, beefy CPU in a long time. The cloud fundamentally changed how compute is made available to us, but that also means we should be adopting new programming models. Yet, I still see numerous teams using pre-cloud paradigms to develop new applications with approaches meant to work around constraints that belong to a distant past. Similar things can be said about how we deal with storage, architectures, etc. In this talk, we'll explore some popular design choices and discover how they address problems that no longer exist. We'll also discuss what alternative approaches you could take, so that next time you design a component or system, you a freed from the shackles of the past.
