R107 - Installing a Power Steering Gearbox

This video is Installing a Power Steering Gearbox. If you want to know how I removed it and locked the steering wheel, see my video Removing a Power Steering Gearbox here.    • R107 - Removing a Power Steering Gearbox   All the R107 manuals and resources in one place — free and online. 👉 https://TonyLiveTV.com In this video I will install a power steering gearbox in my 560SL. I will use a self-made centering pin to center the gearbox for perfect steering wheel alignment every time. After getting everything lined up and centered I will show you how I bleed the power steering gearbox before you start the car. I hope this video helps someone. This is what you will need to complete this job. If pulling the Pitman Arm (recommended) you will need a puller. The one I bought is the OTC (8150) Conical Pitman Arm Puller on Amazon for less than $40: https://amzn.to/3C8sy0c You need a 36mm socket to install the Pitman Arm nut. I suggest a deep socket with 6 points so it stays on the nut. I've had my socket for years, but here's a link to a popular one on Amazon. ARES 25007-1/2-Inch Drive 6 Point Axle Nut Socket (36MM). https://amzn.to/3DaqRRf If you don't already have a long extension for the coupling hex bolts, you might want to get the impact rated one I purchased on Amazon. It has a wobble end and I use it for all kinds of jobs (like transmission removal). Impact Extension Adapter, 24 in. with swivel head was not available the last time I checked: https://amzn.to/3HnzlHw But their 18" & 24" combo is: https://amzn.to/439NJzx Now for the added parts you will need for the re-installation. Everyone will tell you to get the C & M Hydraulics rebuilt steering gearbox. I bought mine from AutohausAZ. 1074602001 - Steering Gearbox https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/1074602001 You will also need 3 NEW copper seal rings and a new Pitman Arm nut. These items should have come with the gearbox because they are required for every install (see video). When you receive your rebuilt it will not come with the threaded nipples for the supply lines to the pump. You will need to remove these from your old gearbox and install them on the new one before sending your old gearbox back. This is why you need 2 new copper seal rings (in/out lines). Your power steering supply lines will require different size seal rings. I bought mine at Pelican Parts: 007603016401 - Copper seal ring https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf... 007603012405 - Copper seal ring https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf... There is one more copper seal ring you need. This one is needed when we center the steering wheel to the gearbox. Here's what you need: 007603008109 - Copper seal ring https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf... 0019905451 - Pitman Arm Nut https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf... And finally you will need to make a special tool. This is needed for the installation of the new gearbox. All you need is an 8mm fine thread bolt (M8x1.0) that is about 1.25" long. You then use a grinder to give it a point. See the video for details on the construction. I am also replacing the steering coupling on my 560SL. Again I recommend only genuine Mercedes for this. The prices vary and you have to be careful of the aftermarket ones. I finally purchased mine at eeuroparts.com: 1154600510 - Steering Coupling https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/1386... You might notice everything is genuine Mercedes including the copper seal rings. You do what you want, but I've already learned my lesson. It's genuine Mercedes first, then OEM and avoid Aftermarket if at all possible. You should also inspect the bolts and lock washers on the steering coupling. These are 6mm hex bolts with lock washers that can be purchased at your local hardware store if needed. Here is the manual that I am "loosely" following: https://www.tonk.ca/Index/Groups/46St... And here is a link to the index page of the above manual: https://www.tonk.ca/Index/117.5index....
