When the Red Army launched Operation Uranus during the Battle of Stalingrad, the Romanian 3rd and 4th Armies guarding the flanks were overwhelmed, and the German 6th Army was encircled in the city on the banks of the Volga River. From then on, the Germans attempted to organize a relief expedition, to be spearheaded by the 4th Panzer Army, but the latter was immobilized by the pressure exerted by the Southwestern Front from the Chir River, at least until its vanguard was unexpectedly annihilated by the brilliant General Hermann Balck's 11th Panzer Division during the Battle of State Farm No. 79.
