They are omnivorous but generally prefer tropical fruits found on the beach, such as coconuts. Hermit crabs do not have shells; the shells they use are from dead gastropods (sea snails). Because they do not grow with their bodies, when they grow larger or their shells become uncomfortable, they will seek out larger and more comfortable shells. Hermit crabs live along the coastline.
