California Dreamin' Performed by the Winona Community Chorale

Recorded live on May 16, 2026 at Central Lutheran Church in Winona, Minnesota, the Winona Community Chorale performs Mac Huff’s lush choral arrangement of “California Dreamin’,” one of the defining songs of the American folk-rock era. Written by John and Michelle Phillips and famously recorded by The Mamas & the Papas in 1965, “California Dreamin’” emerged from a deeply personal moment. During the winter of 1963, the couple was living in a cold New York City apartment when Michelle expressed her longing for the warmth and sunshine of California. Inspired by her homesickness, John Phillips woke her in the middle of the night to help complete the song that would soon become an anthem of an entire generation. The original recording became instantly recognizable not only for its layered harmonies, but also for its haunting flute solo—performed unexpectedly by jazz musician Bud Shank, who happened to be available during the recording session. His improvised alto flute line, recorded in a single take, became one of the song’s most memorable musical signatures. Mac Huff’s arrangement captures the rich vocal textures and “Wall of Sound” atmosphere that helped define the folk-rock movement of the 1960s. At a time when California became the center of American popular music culture, songs like “California Dreamin’” reflected a growing blend of folk introspection, pop sophistication, and rock energy. More than simply a song about weather, “California Dreamin’” captures a distinctly American sense of place and longing. Its contrast between the grayness of an East Coast winter and the idealized promise of California resonated deeply with listeners and helped pave the way for the singer-songwriter movement that would dominate the 1970s. Decades later, the song remains one of the most iconic and influential recordings in American music history. 🎵 Song Credits “California Dreamin’” Written by John Phillips & Michelle Phillips Originally performed by The Mamas & the Papas Arranged by Mac Huff 🎶 About the Concert This performance was part of the Winona Community Chorale’s spring concert, *Tapestry of American Song*, presented in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
