Sons of Anarchy is a popular American television series that started in 2008, with motorcycle clubs located all over central California. Taking you back further in time, Creedence Clearwater Revival & Revisited wrote the song "Lodi" in 1969. Will Smith, Ashton Kutcher, & Mila Kunis have stayed at the locally owned resort, Wine & Roses, probably to experience some of the best wine in the area. Lodi was never its original name, Mokelumne was. It was founded in 1869, when the Central Pacific Railroad picked a site for a new station along their route. By 1874 when the population grew, the town's name changed to Lodi. The town continued to grow, with the first town school built in 1872. In 1887, a fire burned downtown on Sacramento Street, but it didn't stop the town from growing. Finally, in 1906, Lodi became an incorporated town, with George Lawrence as mayor. The Tokay Carnival (now celebrated as the Lodi Grape Festival) began in 1907, as a way to promote their most famous commodity, the Flame Tokay Grape. Some say Lodi is an underrated destination for wine, with it having some of the best wine nationwide. Grape growers have been around since 1800, with many wineries owned and ran as family-owned businesses. Sustainability has also become popular within the wine industry here, as a lot of farmers are joining the LODI RULES Sustainable Winegrowing Program, assisting farmers with future-forward growing practices & more efficient techniques. Today, Old Vine Zinfandel (OVZ) is a buzzword in Lodi, California - as one of the most popular wine varietals in the area. Old vine refers to vineyards that have been around for over 50 years. One step further, Lodi is also known for their ancient vines, making them over 100 years old. Here you will find the legendary Flame Tokay Grapes, which are more difficult to grow in other locations because of its soil and climate requirements. Zinfandels and Flame Tokay grapes were both very popular, but Flame Tokay grapes were grown more as table grapes. However, if you knew Flame Tokay grapes were growing well, showing a bright pinkish-red color, this also meant that zinfandels would grow great in the same area. Today, it is almost impossible to find Flame Tokay grapes, with the main reason being that people prefer seedless. If you look hard enough, you will find them at fruit stands where farmers have refused to give up on this grape variety. Lodi is an up and coming wine town with opportunities for fun wine tasting experiences. Popular wineries to visit would be Michael David and LangeTwins. To taste a great Old Vine Zin, visit Klinker Brick. For a great glass of tempranillo, D'Art winery. We have personally tried the last two, and think they are amazing wines. Not only that, but there are opportunities for BBQ'ing or taking a nice walk at Lodi Lake. If you want to dine, downtown Lodi has everything from sushi at M Sushi Bistro to German inspired eats at the West Oak Nosh. This is definitely a trip to save your stomach for.
