BMW's gasoline models have different engine families depending on the body style and production year, such as M40, M43, M50, M52, M54, N42, N46, N52, N53, N20, N55, B48, and B58. In diesel models, it's possible to encounter engine codes such as M47, M51, M57, N47, N57, and B47. Specifically, the timing chain should be checked in N47 diesel engines, the chain system and lubrication in N20 gasoline engines, the injectors and high-pressure fuel system in N43 and N53 engines, and the turbo and cooling system in N54 and N55 engines. Engines like the M47, M57, M52, and M54, in well-maintained examples, stand out for their durability. Automatic transmissions also use different systems depending on the body style and engine option. In the E36, E39, and E46 eras, ZF 4HP, ZF 5HP, and in some models GM 5-speed automatic transmissions were available. In the E60 and E90 models, ZF 6HP or GM 6-speed transmissions were mostly used, while in the F10 and F30 models, ZF 8HP automatic transmissions were largely preferred.
