It was Karan Johar's directorial debut. The film was a success in India and overseas and became the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. It also became the second highest-grossing Indian film after Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge . Outside India, it was the highest-grossing film of all time before the record was broken by Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham . Kuch Kuch Hota Hai received positive reviews from critics. Particular praise went to Kajol's performance. The soundtrack also became the biggest seller of the year.
