This article explains how to connect additional outlets. *Requires electrician's license. *This is a self-taught method, so proceed at your own risk. We often receive requests to install additional outlets by drawing power from an existing outlet. Depending on the situation, it may or may not be possible to use a power box, and it may not be possible to properly comply with internal wiring regulations. When a power box is available (when it can be used) When removing the existing outlet, if there is only power wiring and an available terminal, you can install an additional outlet by wiring there. When removing the existing outlet, if there are power wiring and a bridging wiring but no available terminals, you will need to use a crossover wiring. When removing an outlet, it may be installed using a clip-on bracket instead of a box. Be careful not to drop the bracket when removing it. When a box is not available (when it cannot be used) When removing the existing outlet and there is no outlet box, there is the issue of how to protect the electrical wiring connections. Internal wiring regulations stipulate that a junction box (such as a joint box) be used to protect electrical wiring connections and prevent exposed wires. If the existing outlet opening is too small for the box to fit, I wrap it with vinyl tape as a last resort to protect it as much as possible. If the opening is very small, such as in furniture outlets, and the connection would be impossible to remove, I use a crimp joint.
