Bruce Soord on remixing Jethro Tull's "Under Wraps" in Dolby Atmos (Interview)
Bruce Soord is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and frontman for the internationally-renowned experimental rock outfit The Pineapple Thief, a musical project he started way back in 1999. Though considered a cult act at first, The Pineapple Thief’s fan base gradually grew through the mid-2000s. The band signed with KScope Records in 2007, later recruiting veteran drummer Gavin Harrison for 2016’s breakthrough album Your Wilderness. Soord has also enjoyed a prolific career as an immersive mixer, creating acclaimed 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes for acts such as Leprous, Tesseract, Big Big Train, Pure Reason Revolution, and Jethro Tull. 2025 saw the release of Retracing Our Steps, the second in a series of archival box sets containing newly-remixed versions of The Pineapple Thief’s older albums in stereo, 5.1, and Dolby Atmos. Additionally, his work on the Atmos mix of It Leads To This earned Soord a ‘Visions of Sound’ award. I recently had the opportunity to chat with Bruce about his work on the forthcoming deluxe editions of Jethro Tull’s Under Wraps (1984) and the challenges that came with it, as well as what lies ahead for both The Pineapple Thief and his solo career.
