History Behind The Odyssey: What's Mythology & What's Real?

The new fantasy film The Odyssey retells one of the oldest and most revered works of western literature. The the ancient Greek saga of King Odysseus. He and his crew depart victorious from the Trojan war, only to meet peril, and a host of other-worldly characters and creatures on their journey home to Ithaca. The film promises to be a big summer blockbuster, even if it isn’t particularly historically accurate. But what is the history behind Homer’s ancient epic? Where the characters inspired by real people, the battles based on true conflicts and the mythical Islands actual places? Let’s follow Odysseus’s legendary trip through the Mediterranean sea, as we discover the history behind the Odyssey. Spolier alert!
