Bosnia - Situation In Gorazde

(26 Apr 1994) Bosnian Serbs let a food convoy reach the hungry residents of Gorazde on Tueday (26/4) as a NATO ultimatum loomed for Serb forces to withdraw their heavy weapons or risk airstrikes. "The situation is getting better in Gorazde," said a U.N. spokesman in Sarajevo, Cmdr. Eric Chaperon. He said Serbs had pulled "a significant portion" of their weapons from the 20-kilometre zone. Chaperon said heavy weapons were gone from the smaller zone. But he said there were still Serb soldiers in the area, and that there was "sporadic small arms and sniping activities" involving both sides. A U.N. aid convoy blocked all day Monday by Serbs finally was allowed to reach Gorazde on Tuesday morning with 80 tons of food. Another convoy left Belgrade, the Yugoslav capital, but later was recalled because U.N. officials didn't want it out in the open as the NATO deadline approached. TV pictures from the stricken town showed the full extent of the damage which resulted from the intensive Serb bombardment.
