STEM vs. humanities: differences in academic writing
Martina, writing trainer for STEM (https://writingscientist.com/), and Claudia, writing trainer for humanities (https://www.claudiamacho.at) discuss the differences in academic writing between STEM and humanities. And the differences are huge! So huge that we can safely talk about two different research cultures — or even two different research worlds. One example: the function and style of language. In STEM, language is considered in a strictly utilitarian sense: its main function is to convey the contents as clearly, precisely and succinctly as possible. In contrast, language is considered art in the humanities. As a result, the authors use complex, rich and diverse language. (Blog articles providing an overview of these differences as well as further opinions and perspectives follow soon.)
