A somewhat daunting voyage, as anything can happen along the way. When we decided to sail around the world, we knew nothing about sailing or boats. We still got our skipper's license to feel safer. Then came the purchase of the sailboat, its very quick preparation due to lack of time, and off we went on our round-the-world trip. We did the transatlantic crossing with a small crew, just the two of us. For one simple reason: we didn't want to take responsibility for other people in case something went wrong. No two transatlantic crossings are alike. Ours was quite rough, with strong winds, cross swells, lots of clouds, and constant rolling. A transatlantic crossing is very tiring and risky. Everything can break down at any moment. That's what happened to us. The engine failed, and consequently, we couldn't recharge the batteries. We had to steer for two days until, thanks to the Iridium Go satellite phone, we were given instructions on how to get it fixed. We could have had another major problem: the autopilot failed. Now that would have been a disaster during a transatlantic crossing with a small crew. Luckily, the autopilot failed just after the crossing. Crossing the ocean is an adventure and we were very glad to have arrived safe and sound.
