Cork’s jazz scene comes alive every autumn with the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, held annually over the long October bank holiday weekend. It’s widely considered Ireland’s biggest jazz event, drawing both local and international musicians, and filling the city with music in venues big and small — from concert halls and theatres to pubs and open-air street performances. Some highlights & features: • The festival programs over 70+ venues across Cork city, Douglas, Kinsale, and more, offering a rich variety of settings and styles. • You’ll see both headline concerts (ticketed) and many free or low cost shows — including jazz in pubs, street sets, and jam sessions. • Cork has a number of local jazz venues and regular nights — for example, Coughlan’s hosts the “Guinness Jazz Club” on some Sundays. • One of Cork’s iconic music venues, Crane Lane Theatre, regularly features jazz, blues, and mixed music nights. • The festival has a long heritage: it was founded in 1978 by Jim Mountjoy, initially to help fill hotel rooms over the bank holiday. • Over the years, the festival has expanded, and not only jazz but genres bordering on swing, blues, brass, and soul sometimes appear.
