And then: According to scholars, zakat on gold and silver is calculated the same way as on money, and when combined, one zakat is paid. This is because gold and silver were originally money: the dinar was a gold coin, and the dirham was a silver coin. Today, paper money has replaced those gold and silver coins. Therefore, he adds his accumulated gold items to the money and pays zakat on everything together. But there is one controversial issue here. If a person saves gold for the future because he will need it someday, then he clearly pays zakat. According to all scholars, zakat is payable on such set-aside gold. If he thinks, "I'll sell it and spend it when I need it," or, for example, "I'll use it for my daughters when I marry them off," then zakat is obligatory in this case too. And this, as we have said, is added to the money one has. There is no disagreement on this. So what is the disagreement? If this is jewelry one wears, one's gold and silver for personal use, should this be included in the calculation or not? This is where there is a disagreement. The majority of scholars have said that just as zakat is not obligatory on the house one lives in, the clothes one wears, and the car one drives, it is also not obligatory on jewelry one wears. But Hanafi scholars say: there is no difference in the matter of gold. Regardless of whether it is set-aside, in use, or worn, zakat must be paid on it. The Hanafi school of thought is more cautious: zakat must be paid on jewelry in any case. If someone asks, "How is it different from other things?" We reply that other items typically lose value over time and price, while gold and silver retain their value. The hadiths were generally transmitted regarding zakat on gold and silver, as were the threats against those who fail to pay it. Therefore, the Hanafi school of thought, and those who agree with them, stated that it must be paid. This is because they count gold along with the money one has. If a person has a business, then the traded goods are also added. For example, gold in the form of jewelry may amount to 10 grams. They may also have a small amount of money, including trade. If they count everything separately, the nisab will not be reached. But if you add everything up and the sum reaches the nisab, then any money that's been sitting unused for a year, such as a woman's savings, is added to the gold, and if there's any trade goods, that's also added. The calculation is the same. All of this relates to the question of reaching the nisab; after that, it's a matter of a year, and that falls under the category of cash. And Allah knows best!
