Australian Sculptural Embroidery Artist, Meredith Woolnough | Fiberchats, Episode:45
Meredith Woolnough is a visual artist from the coastal town of Newcastle, Australia. Her sculptural embroideries capture the power, beauty and fragility of nature in knotted threads. The work employs a unique embroidery technique that utilizes a domestic sewing machine and a base fabric that dissolves in water. By repeatedly stitching threads into dense structures Meredith creates intricate and complex openwork compositions that are then carefully suspended on pins, casting delicate shadows. Her latest work explores themes of environmental degradation and interconnectedness drawing inspiration from the natural forms and structures found in various leaf and coral structures. Meredith Woolnough is a graduate of the University of New South Wales (Bachelor of Fine Arts – honours class 1), the University of Sydney (Masters of teaching) and the University of Newcastle (Bachelor of Natural History Illustration – with distinction). She exhibits her artwork locally and internationally and her work resides in both public and private collections worldwide. Meredith is also the author of the book ‘Organic Embroidery’ published 2018 by Schiffer.
