Claudy Fair 1998
On Saturday 16th May 1998, the village of Claudy held its first May fair for many years. In the past there were nine fairs every year in the area and the May and November fairs were for the purpose of hiring men, women and children for six month periods to the local farmers one of the district's older residents recalls the days when he was hired. There are also interesting reports about the horse and cattle trading in those days. During the 1940's and 50's the local peat bog was a hive of activity during the spring and summer months and turf cutting is re-enacted with many, often humorous memories. One of the blackest memories is of 1972 when the village was wrecked by three bombs. We have interviews with some of the victims and many old pictures of the day when nine Claudy villagers died. The fair itself was a great success, the main feature being the vintage rally and the bonny baby contest. Modern scenery of the town, the river and local beauty spots make 'Images of Claudy' an hour of compulsive viewing.
