Keiko Fujimori: “Si soy presidenta del Perù, gobernaré solo cinco años”

In her first major interview since securing her place in the 2026 presidential runoff, Keiko Fujimori appeared on the program "Esta Noche," where she addressed key issues in the Peruvian political landscape: allegations of electoral irregularities, her relationship with Rafael López Aliaga, the support of other political leaders, and criticism from the anti-Fujimorist movement. The Fuerza Popular candidate also delivered direct messages about the country's future and the electoral process on June 7. During the conversation with Milagros Leiva, Keiko insisted that the concerns about the electoral process are not recent and asserted that her party has been raising questions since the 2021 elections. "The irregularities date back to 2021. We filed more than 700 complaints with evidence in hand, and they weren't even analyzed," she stated. However, she also recalled that she accepted the results of that election "for the sake of the country's stability," although she noted that there is currently uncertainty surrounding the electoral process. The leader of Fuerza Popular also addressed the position of Rafael López Aliaga, who questioned the results of the first round of voting. Although she avoided confronting him, she acknowledged the political importance of the leader of Renovación Popular and maintained that he should assume the position he won. "I believe that the citizens who voted for him expect to see him assume this position. He has much to contribute to the country," she stated. She also revealed that last year she tried to build a political alliance with him and asserted that she was even willing to relinquish a potential presidential candidacy. Another moment that drew attention was when she spoke about former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. Keiko confirmed that she personally sought him out and apologized for past actions. "I wanted to thank him for the pardon of my father and ask for his forgiveness. We both acknowledged that we should have engaged in more dialogue," she declared. The candidate also indicated that, if elected president, she would support Kuczynski receiving specialized medical care due to his health condition. Furthermore, Keiko Fujimori responded to criticism regarding a potential concentration of power and ruled out any intention of remaining in government longer. "If I am elected president of Peru, it will only be for five years," she stated. The candidate assured that she will respect democratic rules and maintained that she is "absolutely respectful of the Constitution and the rule of law," in response to questions related to a possible reelection. KEIKO SEEKS TO REDUCE ANTI-VOTE AND DISTANCES HERSELF FROM CONFRONTATION In the midst of the campaign for the second round, Keiko Fujimori acknowledged that one of her main challenges remains reducing the rejection of her political figure. "We have learned that confrontation gets us nowhere," she stated. She also highlighted that, compared to previous elections, the level of anti-vote has decreased and affirmed that she will seek to reach out to sectors that still maintain a distance from Fujimorism. The candidate also criticized the political circle of her rival, Roberto Sánchez, and questioned the presence of figures like Antauro Humala. "We don't want to go back 40 years. It would be disastrous for Peruvians to seize control of institutions and jeopardize economic stability," she stated.
